Four and a half years ago I rescued a Siberian Husky from the SPCA. Since I have owned Siberians in the past, I know the breed very well. None of my previous Siberians had severe separation anxiety, however. (In retrospect, I realized that my second Siberian had mild separation anxiety, but that just resulted in a lot of howling when I was not home. Nothing more serious than that.
Separation anxiety is a devasting problem, both the the owners of the dogs, and for the dogs themselves. It results in a huge number of dogs being euthanized, since the owners can not live with the consequences. After I got Dakota, and realized how severe his separation anxiety was, I read a lot of books on the condition and its treatment. I also went to many web sites seeking information. Unfortunately, I did not find any “one stop shop” that discussed the problem, including the causes, cures, and treatments, both behavioral and pharmaceutical. I hope that this site can become such a clearing house for information on separation anxiety in dogs.
